FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin guard Tammara Marion was named the Southland women's basketball co-player of the week by vote of the league's sports information directors the conference announced Monday, sharing the honor with Lamar's Kalis Loyd.
The honor is the first of its kind for Marion, who averaged 26.5 points in two games for the Ladyjacks last week. A native of Houston, Texas, Marion dropped in five 3-point buckets and 21 points overall as SFA earned its first win of the season Wednesday against Texas-Pan American.
She followed that up by scoring a career-high 32 points - more than half of SFA's total points - in a one-point road loss at Texas Southern. Despite most of her shots coming from the perimeter, Marion still managed to hit 62.5 percent of her shots against the Tigers and 54.5 percent of her shots on the week. It was a career high and the first 30-point game of Marion's career, as well as the first 30-point game for a Ladyjack since 2008.
Marion has now hit for at least a dozen points in all seven of SFA's games, and has led the team in scoring on four occasions.
Loyd, a native of Malmoe, Sweden, was named to the all-tournament team in the Arizona State Classic after scoring a career-high 34 points to lead the Cardinals past Cal Poly in the consolation game. She also tied a career high with six steals.
Marion and the Ladyjacks are next in action on Wednesday when they travel to nationally-ranked Oklahoma.
