Stephen F. Austin Game Notes
Sam Houston State Game Notes
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team returns to action Saturday when it prepares to open Southland Conference play against rival Sam Houston State. The Ladyjacks take to the court looking to stop a four-game skid, and erase the thought of three-straight heartbreaking losses. Sam Houston State (3-8) enters Saturday's contest looking to shake off some early-season struggles. The Bearkats have dropped five consecutive, and six of their last seven games heading into the league opener. The game against the Bearkats is slated to tip off at 6 p.m. from William R. Johnson Coliseum, and it will be the Ladyjacks first home game in more than a month.
SFA vs. the Bearkats: The Ladyjacks have dominated the all-time series against Sam Houston State, 59-6 (.908), and have won six of the last seven meetings between the two schools, but SFA is coming off a 68-65 setback to the Bearkats last season in Huntsville. SFA recorded a 73-40 victory over Sam Houston State the last time the two teams met in Nacogdoches (2007-08).
Kids Night Out: The Ladyjacks will be hosting Kids Night Out Saturday evening at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. All children, K-6, will receive free admission to Saturday's game against Sam Houston State. The elementary school with the best attendance will receive bragging rights, and a Ladyjack Purple Award to hang in the school.
Tradition of Winning in the SLC: As dominant as SFA has been nationally, they have been just as strong in the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks are the conference's most dominant team, compiling a 308-62 (.832) all-time record. SFA has won 15 of a possible 22 SLC tournament titles and 14 regular-season titles. SFA has also recorded four undefeated seasons in league play and has had 54 players named All-SLC.
Riley vs. the SLC: Ladyjack head coach Lee Ann Riley has compiled a dominant record against Southland Conference foes. Riley is 93-43 (.684) against SLC teams during the regular season.
Home Sweet Home: The Ladyjacks are one of the nation's all-time winningest teams at home, with a 374-97 (.794) all-time record. SFA has won 42 of its last 54 games in the Coliseum. The Ladyjacks are 3-0 at home this season.
SFA in SLC Openers: The Ladyjacks are 20-2 (.909) all-time in Southland Conference opening games. The Ladyjacks had won four consecutive league-openers prior to last season's setback at Sam Houston State. The Ladyjacks are 2-1 (.667) all-time against SHSU in conference-opening games.
SFA in SLC Home Openers: The Ladyjacks are 6-2 (.750) in Southland Conference home openers under head coach Lee Ann Riley. The Ladyjacks have won two straight, and three of the last four conference home openers.
Double-Double: Junior Ebony Alexander recorded her first double-double of the season, and the second of her career with her 11 points and 10 rebounds at Tulsa. It is Alexander's first double-dobule since she scored 10 points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds against UTSA in the 2008-09 regular-season finale.
Déja Vu All Over Again: The Ladyjacks tied a school record with their 11 three-pointers at Tulsa. It marks the second time this season SFA has hit 11 threes in a game, and the fourth time in school history.
Negative Nailbiters: The Ladyjacks have been involved in three consecutive thrillers that have gone down to the wire. Unfortunately, SFA has come up on the short end in all three contests. The margin of victory has been no more than four points in any of the games, and SFA dropped all three by a combined 11 points.
Approaching the Milestone: Senior Whitney Cormier scored 19 points at Tulsa and needs only 108 points to become the 24th player in school history to score 1,000 points in their career.
Up Next ... SFA returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 13, when they travel to Conway, Ark., to face the Sugar Bears. The Ladyjacks will be back in Nacogdoches, Jan. 16 to host Nicholls.
