WACO, Texas - The Lumberjacks picked up 10 hits against Baylor pitching on Tuesday, but were only 3-of-12 with runners in scoring position in stranding 11 runners as Baylor took a 12-2 win over SFA at Baylor Ballpark in the `Jacks final non-conference game of the season.
Tanner Hines picked up a single in the ninth inning to extend his team-best hit streak to 16 games for the `Jacks (22-28, 13-16 SLC), but out of SFA's 10 hits on the night none went for extra bases. That was not the case for Baylor (27-20), who finished with five extra base hits. Three of those came from leadoff man Dustin Dickerson, who went 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBI.
SFA used five pitchers in the contest, taking advantage of the opportunity to log some innings in the team's final game on the road in the regular season.
Bo Coffman led the way for the `Jacks, picking going 3-for-4 on the evening while Joe Staley added a pair of singles in three at-bats as well.
Shawn Tolleson took the win for Baylor with 5.0 innings of work to go to 1-1 on the year, while Jeremy Tamez took the loss with 2.2 innings of work to fall to 0-1.
The Bears used six hits, including a pair of doubles, to get four runs across in the second off of Tamez. Back-to-back bunts from Brooks Pinckard and Raynor Campbell set the table, and after a double steal put them each in scoring position, Dickerson delivered his second double in as many innings to score both runners. Shaver Hansen and Chris Evatt later added RBI singles to give Baylor the early 4-0 edge.
One inning later Tamez loaded the bases with two outs before Zack Taylor came in from the bullpen to face Joey Hainsfurther. The Baylor second baseman shot the first pitch he saw from Taylor down the left-field line for a two-run double to give Baylor a 6-0 lead before Taylor fanned Shaver Hansen swinging to end the inning.
The `Jacks used consecutive singles from Coffman and Staley to set up their first run of the night, cutting the lead to 6-1 on a RBI single from Gabriel Garcia-Serrano. But the Bears used an infield single from Aaron Miller, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a Ben Booker single that took a difficult hop over Sean Meyers' glove at first base to get the run back just one inning later.
SFA threatened to really cut into the lead in the top of the fifth, getting a run on a sacrifice fly from Brian Ferguson that scored Tanner Hines to trim the lead to 7-2. Then with two outs Tolleson started to lose control of the strike zone, walking Adam Bosley on four pitches before giving up singles to Coffman and Staley on consecutive 2-0 counts. Jeffrey Kello then nearly put the `Jacks right back into the game on Tolleson's first pitch, but Booker camped out under the fly ball on the warning track for the final out.
Taylor tossed a scoreless fifth frame, but the Bears got a pair of unearned runs in the sixth against Travis Harrelson on an odd play that saw Pinckard actually round all four bases on a bunt single. A pair of errors were included on the play, getting Pinckard and Greg Glime across the plate for a 9-2 lead. Dickerson added his 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth for the final Baylor runs.
SFA next plays on Thursday when it opens up the final Southland Conference series of the season, hosting Lamar at 3:00 p.m. at Jaycees Field.
