NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Lumberjacks banged out a season-best 20 hits on Wednesday, scoring eight runs in their final four innings as they picked up their second win in as many days over Houston Baptist, 10-5, at Jaycees Field.
SFA (5-12, 0-5 SLC) got at least one hit in every inning against the Huskies (1-15) in winning consecutive games for the first time this season. The `Jacks have won the last four meetings all-time against HBU.
The 20 hits for SFA was also just one hit shy of the school record of 21 hits in a game, set twice by the 2007 SFA team. Of the 20 hits, 18 were singles with two doubles accounting for the only extra-base hits of the day for SFA.
Bo Coffman and Sean Meyers each had three-hit games, with Coffman reaching in all five of his plate appearances and picking up a pair of RBI and a double. Overall, seven Lumberjacks had at least two hits on the afternoon.
Travis Harrelson earned his first career win, allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings on the mound with one strikeout. Jared Schrom got his first start of the year and went five innings, striking out seven.
Jay Reese moved to 0-3 on the season after allowing five runs, four earned, in five innings on the hill for the Huskies.
SFA scored first in the third inning, taking advantage of a Tanner Hines single and stolen base when Zach Gardner singled to right field for his third RBI in two days. He then stole second and scored two batters later when Coffman shot a single through the middle, staking SFA to a 2-0 lead through three.
HBU answered in the top of the fourth with a pair of unearned runs, but the `Jacks tallied two more in the next four frames, starting in the fifth. Meyers opened with a leadoff single, moved to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on Coffman's double. Coffman then came home two batters later when Brian Ferguson singled against a drawn-in infield for a 4-2 lead.
Brian Franze tied up the game with his first home run of the year off of Jeremy Tamez in the sixth, but Meyers and Joe Staley gave SFA a two-run lead in the bottom half of the frame with RBI singles.
Hines and Jarid Scarafiotti each had RBI singles in the seventh, and Thomas Staley and Justin McAninch both tallied their first career RBI with hits in their first at-bats in the eighth.
SFA jumps back into league play on Friday when Nicholls comes to Jaycees Field. The `Jacks swept the Colonels in Thibodaux, La., a year ago; however, the Colonels have jumped out to a 4-2 start in the SLC this season. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
