DALLAS, Texas - The Lumberjacks only managed five hits on Tuesday against Dallas Baptist and were unable to hold off one of the nation's most surprising teams as the Patriots picked up 7-3 win over SFA at Patriot Field.
SFA (14-25, 3-14 SLC) has now lost its last eight games, the longest skid of the season. Dallas Baptist (27-11) remains in the hunt for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with teh win.
Jeremy Tamez got the start for SFA, but was pulled after only an inning. Travis Harrelson then came on to pitch 2 2/3 innings, but allowed three runs and took the loss in his first career decision. Jared Stafford earned his first win of the season for the Patriots after a five-inning start.
DBU took only three batters to take the lead over SFA with Evan Bigley connecting off of Tamez for a two-run homer in the first inning. The runs marked the ninth consecutive game in which SFA's opponents scored first.
The 'Jacks got right back in it, however, with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Matt Whatley made it on with a one-out walk and came home on a single by Kevin Croft just two batters later. An error on the play put runners at second and third base before Sean Meyers knotted the game with a sacrifice fly.
However, the lead only lasted until the Patriots came to bat in their half of the inning. Four straight one-out singles put them back in front and drove Harrelson to the dugout. Bruce Mayberry then surrendered a two-run single to Ryan Enos to put DBU up 6-3.
Noel Trevino doubled home an unearned run for SFA in the top of the fifth, but two more runs for DBU in the bottom of the inning gave the game its final margin.
SFA gets two days off before hitting the field again, this time in Thibodaux, La. The 'Jacks will face off with Nicholls State in a three-game series beginning Friday.
