STILLWATER, Okla. - Stephen F. Austin swept both games Saturday on the opening day of the Oklahoma State Mizuno Classic. The Ladyjacks knocked off Centenary, 8-0, in the first game, then squeaked out a 1-0 win over host team Oklahoma State in the nightcap.
SFA (14-10) outhit the Ladies, 14-6, and rolled to an easy 8-0 victory in Game 1. SFA tallied three hits in the second but didn't reap the rewards until the bottom of the third when the Ladyjacks plated six runs on seven hits. Kendal Harper got things started with a double to right-center then scored on a single by Briana Bishop. The next batter, Ashley Struchtemeyer, launched a two-run homer to center field, giving SFA a 3-0 lead.
Kari Hugie followed with a single, then Kim Daley doubled down the left-field line. Malina Meng scored Hugie with a single down the left-field line. Meng stole second, then she and Daley both scored on a double to left field by Monica Hirsch.
SFA added two runs in the sixth to collect the run-rule-shortened victory. Hirsch led off with a bunt single, then moved to second on a throwing error. She scored on a triple to center by Benet Higgs. The next batter, Harper, doubled to left-center, scoring Michele Huffman, who pinch-ran for Higgs.
Freshman Lauren Luetge started and went all six innings for SFA. She scattered six hits and two walks with four strikeouts, in improving to 4-3 on the season.
In the second game, freshman Monika Covington made a one-run homer in the second inning stand up for a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma State.
Hugie ripped a solo home run to left field with two outs in the second inning that proved to be all the run support Covington needed.
Covington spread seven hits over seven innings and recorded 10 strikeouts to improve to 9-4 on the season.
The Ladyjacks will take on Texas Wesleyan Sunday in SFA's last game of round-robin play.
