NACOGDOCHES, Texas - What looked like it would be a close game through two innings quickly got ugly for SFA, as the Southeastern Louisiana Lions used a pair of grand slams and three total home runs to roll past the Lumberjacks 17-7 at Jaycees Field on Saturday.
The 17 runs are the most that SFA (8-8, 0-2) has given up at home since bringing back baseball.
Senior Heath Konesheck took the loss, but was only one of four Lumberjack pitchers to give up at least three runs to a Lion (10-6, 2-0) offense that has recently gotten hot.
Southeastern starter Josh Black held the SFA offense in check through four innings before giving up three in the fifth, but he had already been given an 11-run lead after the Lions exploded for five runs in the third and six in the fourth.
The Lions only needed three hits to score five runs in the third, and after giving up two runs in the fourth `Jacks pitcher Kevin Thomas loaded the bases before making way for Erik Gregersen in relief. He was then quickly greeted by Chris Ernest first home run of the season, a grand slam that opened the game up.
SFA answered another six-run Lion innings - the sixth - with a four-run ninth inning of their own to give the score its final look. Matt Whatley broke out of a tough swinging slump in that frame, with a two-run home run off of Eric Callendar - his fourth of the season.
The `Jacks wrap up their three-game set with Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. They next play Dallas Baptist in Dallas on Tuesday before continuing conference play at Lamar Thursday-Saturday.
