NACOGDOCHES - Fresh off their 18-point victory at Sam Houston State, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks will look to keep their win streak alive Thursday when it hosts Texas State. Winners of three-straight, and four of their last five, the Ladyjacks (10-14/7-5 SLC) will face a league-leading Texas State team that hasn't lost in its last seven ball games, and is coming off an 85-79 victory at Texas-San Antonio. The game against the Bobcats (18-8/12-1 SLC) is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Ladyjacks own a 48-7 (.873) all-time record against Texas State. SFA has won six of the last seven meetings against the Bobcats, but Texas State is coming off a 76-75 victory over SFA earlier this season in San Marcos. The Ladyjacks recorded a 63-47 victory over Texas State in the William R. Johnson Coliseum last season.
The Ladyjacks' game against Texas State Thursday marks the program's annual Academic Shootout, which goes to help the Ladyjacks raise funds for summer school scholarships. Fans can pledge a flat rate, or a certain amount per point. Fans can register for the Academic Shootout at the front gate of the Johnson Coliseum prior to every home basketball game.
Right on the heels of the program's 800th all-time win, SFA now has its sights set on 300 all-time Southland Conference victories. The Ladyjacks' win over Sam Houston State Saturday marked the program's 296th win over a Southland Conference opponent.
The Ladyjacks magic number to lock up a berth in the 2008 SLC tournament is four. Any combination of four SFA wins or four losses by either Southeastern Louisiana, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi or McNeese State will lock up a berth for the Ladyjacks. SFA can still earn the league's No. 2 overall seed, but SFA will need to win out, and need Texas-San Antonio and Texas-Arlington to lose their remaining games, and have Lamar lose at least one of its final four games. For SFA to earn the No. 3 overall seed in the tournament, they need to win out and have UTA lose its remaining games. For SFA to be the four seed, they will need to win out and have Lamar lose at least one of its final four contests.
Senior Nikki Carr recorded her fifth double of the season Saturday against Sam Houston State. Carr led the Ladyjacks by scoring 15 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Carr just missed recording her first-career triple-double dishing out eight assists. It marks the ninth time this season that a Ladyjack has recorded double-double.
The Ladyjacks will then hit the road Saturday, March 1, for a 4 p.m. game at Texas-Arlington. The Lady Mavs are 15-9 (.625) on the season, and 10-3 (.769) in SLC contests. UTA is currently third in the SLC West only two games back of Texas State. The game against the Lady Mavs will be played at Texas Hall.
