The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will try and convert their exciting three-point victory over New Orleans into consecutive wins as they travel to Cancun, Mexico to compete in the Cancun Caribbean Classic. The Ladyjacks (5-4) will open the tournament Friday against Missouri State at 3:30 p.m. The Lady Bears enter the game with a 2-7 (.222) overall record, and have dropped five of their last six games . The Ladyjacks will return to the court Saturday to face San Francisco (3-7). The Dons ended a four-game slide with the nine-point victory over Sacramento State Sunday. The game against the Dons is slated to begin at 1 p.m. The fourth team in the tournament is Tennessee-Chattanooga. All games will be played in the Galatic Ballroom.
SFA vs. the Lady Bears: Friday's game against Missouri State will mark the first meeting between the two schools in women's basketball.
SFA vs. the Dons: The Ladyjacks have never faced San Francisco on the hardwood prior to this Saturday's contest.
Tradition of Winning: The SFA Ladyjack basketball program has been one of the most dominant programs in women's basketball history. The Ladyjacks are among the nation's all-time top 10 with 811 wins. The Ladyjacks are also among the all-time top 10 with a .720 winning percentage (811-315).
Alexander the Great: Sophomore point guard Ebony Alexander recorded a career-high 19-point effort in the win over New Orleans. Alexander finished the night 6-of-12 (.500) from the floor, and was an impressive 5-of-10 (.500) from the free throw line.
Air Raid: Sophomore Ebony Alexander knocked down a career-high five three-pointers in the victory over UNO. It is the most threes by a Ladyjack since Kirby Killingsworth hit six three-pointers against Nicholls during the 2003-04 season.
Arc Angels: The Ladyjacks buried a season-high 10 three-pointers, and shot a season-best 48 percent from beyond the three-point line Saturday in the win over New Orleans. It is the most threes the Ladyjacks have knocked down in a game since they recorded 10 against Sam Houston State during the 2006-07 season.
Becoming Offensive: The Ladyjacks recorded one of their better offensive nights of the season in the win over the Lady Privateers. SFA connected on 23-of-53 (.434) shots on the night. It was the second time this season that SFA has shot over 40 percent from the field.
Nacogdoches Block Party: Freshman Amina Sawyer tied a career-high with three blocks Saturday against UNO. The impressive thing about her blocks is that they all came within a two-minute time span in the second half.
The Defense Doesn't Rest Despite its tough non-conference slate the Ladyjacks continue to be the Southland Conference leader in terms of forcing their opponents into turnovers. The Ladyjacks have forced their opponents into 179 and are averaging 19.9 forced turnovers per game.
Up Next ... Following the Cancun Classic, the Ladyjacks will not return to the court until after the New Year, when they travel to Auburn, Ala., to take on the 11th-ranked Auburn Tigers. The game against Auburn is slated for a 2 p.m. start Saturday, Jan. 3, from the Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum. The game against the Tigers will be the Ladyjacks' third game against a nationally ranked foe this season.
