NACOGDOCHES - Fresh off their 73-40 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will look to string together consecutive victories for the third time this season when it travels to San Marcos, Texas to face Texas State. Winners of three of their last five games, the Ladyjacks will head to Texas State (11-8/5-1 SLC) looking to cool off a Bobcat team that has won five of its past six, and six of its last eight games. The game against the Bobcats is slated to tipoff at 7 p.m. from Strahan Coliseum.
The Ladyjacks have recorded a dominant 48-6 (.889) all-time record against Texas State, including six consecutive victories in the series. SFA has lost only three games to the Bobcats dating back to the 1996-97 season. The Ladyjacks swept the season series from Texas State last year, including a 73-70 decision in San Marcos.
Thursday's game against Texas State will be televised by Fox Sports Southwest. The Ladyjacks are 16-9 (.640) all-time in televised games. The Ladyjacks were televised twice last season, splitting the two games. Thursday's game will mark the fourth time that SFA has squared off against Texas State in a televised game. The Ladyjacks are 2-1 all-time against the Bobcats in those games.
The Ladyjacks became the sixth member of an elusive club Saturday. With the Ladyjacks' 73-40 victory over Sam Houston State, the Ladyjacks became only the sixth women's program in NCAA Division I history to record 800 wins. The Ladyjacks now join Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, Texas and James Madison as the only schools to ever accomplish the feat. Making the victory more special was the fact that it was Sue Gunter Day on the SFA campus.
Right on the heels of the program's 800th all-time win, SFA now has its sights set on 300 all-time Southland Conference victories. The Ladyjacks' win over Sam Houston State Saturday marked the program's 292nd win over a conference opponent.
Senior Nikki Carr became the 23rd Ladyjack in program history to join the 1,000-point club. Carr scored 12 points in the game, but she joined the club with her fifth point of the contest, which came on a layup with 13:05 remaining in the second half.
After battling some early-season struggles from beyond the three-point arc, the Ladyjacks are slowly starting to see more production from beyond the arc. SFA has connected on 24-of-its-last-75 three-pointers (.320) during the team's past four games.
One of the reason's for SFA increased production from beyond the three-point arc is due to freshman Ebony Alexander. Beset by injuries during the early part of the season, Alexander has really picked up the pace over the course of the team's past three games. During that time she is averaging 12.6 points per game, and has connected on 8-of-18 (.444) three-point attempts.
Freshman Chantol Drennan pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds in the Ladyjacks' victory over Sam Houston State. Drennan also scored nine points in the game, missing her first-career double-double by only one point.
The Ladyjacks will then return home for a Saturday showdown against the defending conference champion UTA Lady Mavs (10-7/5-1 SLC). Texas-Arlington enters the week having won five-of-its-last-six contests, and seven-of-its-last-10. The game against the Lady Mavs is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
