COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack bats fell silent at Texas A&M as they were held to just four hits in a 6-0 loss to the No. 22 (Collegiate Baseball) Aggies at Olsen Field in College Station. The defeat snaps SFA's two-game win streak and sends its overall record to 23-20. The Aggies now have a 33-10 overall mark.
The Lumberjacks and Aggies remained scoreless through the first three and a half innings until the Aggies put together a big inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Erik Gregersen was called in to relieve Lumberjack starter David Miller with one man on base and a 1-0 Texas A&M lead. After Gregersen walked the first batter he faced, Daman Aaron was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gregersen then threw four straight balls to Parker Dalton to walk the second run of the inning across the plate, giving the Aggies a 2-0 advantage. With Kevin Thomas relieving Gregersen on the mound, Brandon Hicks hit a single to left field to send two runs across the plate for a 4-0 lead and to put runners on second and third. Ben Feltner then hit a single to SFA first baseman Steven Hill, but Feltner beat out the throw from Hill to Thomas as Dalton crossed the plate. Hicks then tried to score, but Thomas made the throw to Lumberjack catcher Ryan Sinclair to get the out at home and end the inning with Texas A&M taking a 5-0 lead. The Aggies tacked on the final run in the bottom of the seventh.
Miller matched his career high as he struck out seven Aggies through 3.2 innings. He gave up one run off four hits. Miller also struck out the side in the second inning despite suffering his first loss of the season to even his record to 1-1.
Zach Gardner, Steven Hill, Kevin Crabtree, and Jeff Brewer each had a hit with Gardner and Hill each collecting a double.
The Lumberjacks are back in Southland Conference action this weekend as they host the Nicholls State Colonels in a three-game series from Jaycees Field. Friday's game will begin at 3 p.m. with Saturday's and Sunday's games slated for a 1 p.m. start.
