NACOGDOCHES - Erich Lehmann pitched his second complete game of the season and Noel Trevino's three-run home run powered a five-run second inning as the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks put together a 6-3 win over the Lamar Cardinals Sunday afternoon. Lehmann, who has pitched two straight complete games at Jaycees Field, gave up 10 hits but only three runs and struck out six in his fifth win of the season. Trevino hit his fifth home run of the year as SFA's record moved to 13-14 overall and 2-4 in Southland Conference action. Lamar saw its SLC five-game win streak come to an end as its record moves to 18-10 overall and 5-1 in SLC play.
In the Lumberjacks' half of the second inning, Kevin Crabtree led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on Chris Smith's single to left field. Justin Long was then issued a walk to load the bases for SFA. With one out, Kevin Croft put a single through the left side for the RBI. On the next play, Zach Gardner hit a fielder's choice to shortstop to score Smith from third and for the put out at second base. With runners on the corners and a 2-0 lead, Trevino cleared the bases with a home run and extended the Lumberjacks lead to 5-0.
The Cardinals cut SFA's lead to four in the third inning. With one out, Colin DeLome walked and advanced to second on David Moore's two-out base hit to center field. DeLome scored on an RBI single to put Lamar on the board, 5-1. They added another run in the fourth inning when Brian Lloyd got on the base paths with a double to left field. He advanced to third on a single from Eric Kanaby and crossed the plate on a sac fly hit by Ryan Baker.
The Lumberjacks added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Gardner led off the inning with a triple. He then scored on a sacrifice to center field from Steven Hill for the 6-2 lead.
Lamar added one more run in the top of the eighth when Michael Ambort led off with a center field double. He scored from third on a sac fly to right field to cut the Lumberjacks lead to 6-3.
In the top of the ninth, with one out, Lloyd and Kanaby hit back-to-back singles up the middle to put runners on first and second. After a visit to the mound from head coach Donnie Watson, Lehmann completed the inning by forcing Baker to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to take the win.
At the plate, Trevino and Smith had two hits apiece. Trevino also scored a run and had three RBI. Crabtree, Pitts, Croft, and Gardner all pitched in with one hit to combine for SFA's six hits. Hill went to the plate three times, but did not get credit for an at-bat after being walked intentionally in the first and taking two more walks before hitting the sacrifice fly in the seventh.
SFA will return to the field Wednesday to continue its longest home stand of the season with a midweek game versus Dallas Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
