NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will have a tough stretch ahead of them as they close out the 2006-07 season. The Ladyjacks (17-8/9-3 SLC) head into the week riding a three-game win streak, but will close the season against the No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 teams in the SLC West Division. The Ladyjacks begin that four-game stretch Thursday in San Marcos, Texas against Texas State (17-9/10-3). The Bobcats enter the week winners of three straight and four of their last five games. The game against the Bobcats is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from Strahan Coliseum. The Ladyjacks will then return home Saturday for a 6 p.m. showdown against league-leader Texas-Arlington. The Lady Mavs (18-8/13-0 SLC) enter the week riding a 12-game win streak. Saturday's game against the Lady Mavs will be played in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA vs. the Bobcats: The Ladyjacks are 47-6 (.887) all-time against Texas State. SFA has won the past five meetings between the two schools, including a 63-47 decision in Nacogdoches earlier this season. The Ladyjacks recorded a 60-54 victory in the 2005-06 season in San Marcos, Texas.
Riley Wins No. 100: The Ladyjacks 11-point victory over Sam Houston State Friday night in the Coliseum marked head coach Lee Ann Riley's 100th victory at SFA.
A Career Night: Friday's victory against Sam Houston State marked career-high performances from several SFA players. Senior Jennifer Simpson came off the bench Friday to score a career-high 17 points on 6-of-9 (.667) shooting. She was 4-of-5 (.800) from beyond the arc in the game. Simpson also grabbed six rebounds, blocked two shots and dished out an assist in the victory.
Putting the Point in Point Guard: Not to be outdone by her teammate, freshman Martina Holloway also scored a career-high 17 points against the Bearkats. Holloway finished the game 5-of-11 (.455) from the floor, while knocking down 4-of-9 (.444) from beyond the arc.
Player of the Game: Freshman point guard Martina Holloway was named Fox Sports Player of the Game for her effort against Sam Houston State. Holloway scored a career-high 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out six assists in the victory over the Bearkats.
Attacking the Glass: While Jennifer Simpson and Martina Holloway were busy setting career highs in points, senior Natalie Kizzee was setting a career-high of another kind. Kizzee led all players with 13 rebounds in the win over the 'Kats.
Sharp Shooters: The Ladyjacks set a new season-high in three-point field goals, knocking down 10 against Sam Houston State. SFA finished the game 10-of-22 (.455) from beyond the arc for the game. The last time SFA recorded at least 10 threes in a game came against Lamar last season when SFA knocked down 11. The Ladyjacks have hit 17 three-pointers in their last two games.
Charity Work: Senior Charity Egenti has really upped her output since the beginning of Southland Conference play. Egenti currently leads the SLC in points (18.8 ppg) and rebounds (10.6 rpg), and is tied for second in blocks (2.08 bpg) during conference only games. She is also one of only two players in the league to average double figures in rebounds during SLC games (SLU's Jazmin Cain).
Nacogdoches Block Party: Senior Charity Egenti recorded seven blocks last week, which places her among the school's all-time top 10 in that category. Despite playing in only her second season at SFA. Egenti is ninth all-time at SFA with 77 career swats.
Arc Angel: Nikki Carr is among the school's list of elite three-point shooters and she is only a junior. She is currently seventh all-time with 92 career threes.
Up Next ... The Ladyjacks will be back in action Saturday to host league-leader Texas-Arlington. The game against the Lady Mavs is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
