NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Road Trip Double Dip: The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will take on Texas A&M Wednesday in a road doubleheader. The games are slated for 2 and 4 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex. The Ladyjacks are 3-4 on the year and coming off the wrong side of a doubleheader sweep at Louisiana Tech a week ago. The Aggies, meanwhile, are playing strong. Texas A&M is 10-0 this season and ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll.
Last Time Out: SFA was swept by Louisiana Tech in a road doubleheader last Tuesday night. The Ladyjacks played from behind in both games. The Lady Techsters took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1, and that proved to be more than enough, as SFA managed just one hit in a 3-0 shutout. In the nightcap, Louisiana Tech again got in front early, scoring a run each in the first and second inning, then adding single runs again in the fourth and sixth. SFA put together its only rally of the series in the top of the seventh, when the Ladyjacks scored three runs on five hits. But SFA stranded two runners and came up one run shy of tying the contest. Freshman outfielder Kendal Harper went 3-for-5 to lead the Ladyjacks at the plate. Junior infielder Jessica Tullos was 2-for-6 with an RBI. Freshman Ashley Wilburn pitched in the opener, scattering four hits over six innings with three strikeouts. Sophomore Kari Hugie got the nod in Game 2 and gave up nine hits in taking the complete-game loss.
The Aggies: Texas A&M is enjoying a stellar start to the 2007 season. The Aggies are ranked No. 3 in the country by the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll. Their 10-0 record includes wins against four Top 25 programs. Texas A&M has defeated No. 20 Fresno State (10-2), No. 4 Northwestern (4-3), No. 3 UCLA (5-4) and then-No. 1 Arizona (3-2). The Aggies are beating the competition handily, too. A&M averages seven runs per game to its opponents' 2.1 runs per outing. As a team, the Aggies are batting .313 with seven home runs. Megan Gibson leads the team with a .571 average. Jamie Hinshaw, next on the squad with a .359 average, leads the team with 14 runs driven in. The Aggie pitchers have posted a 1.06 earned run average to this point and are holding the opposition to a .167 batting average. Amanda Scarborough is 5-0 with a 0.80 ERA and a team-best 34 strikeouts.
The Coaches: SFA is coached by Jenifer Wells. Wells is in her second season at SFA, where she holds a 23-32 (.418) record. In her five-year collegiate coaching career, Wells is 159-140 (.532). The Aggies are under the direction of Jo Evans. In her 10th season at Texas A&M, Evans has compiled a 376-209-2 (.642) record.
