
Ladyjacks Host Grambling State

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will look to bounce back from its season-opening loss at New Orleans when hosts Grambling State Tuesday. The game against the Lady Tigers is slated to tip off at 5:30 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum, and is a scheduled doubleheader with the SFA men's team. Grambling State enters the season with a 1-0 overall record after knocking off Texas College, 65-42, Sunday evening.
Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack head coach Lee Ann Riley is 104-75 (.581) in her seventh season in Nacogdoches. She is 235-132 (.640) in her 13th season as a head coach. Grambling State head coach David Ponton is 180-113 (.614) in his 10th season with the Lady Tigers.
SFA is 2-1 (.667) all-time against Grambling State. The series began during the 1987-88 season where SFA recorded a three-point victory, 82-79. The Lady Tigers recorded a 63-62 win the following season. The Ladyjacks' other win in the series was a 102-50 decision in 1989-90.
The Ladyjacks are 3-3 (.500) all-time in home openers under head coach Lee Ann Riley. SFA enters tonight's game having won two consecutive home openers. The list of season-opening home wins under Riley's direction includes victories against Arizona and Louisiana Tech.
Freshman Decreasha Goodner has made her presence felt for the SFA Ladyjacks in a very short period of time. She led the Ladyjacks in scoring during the two exhibition games averaging 16.5 points per game. In the season opener at New Orleans, Goodner was 6-of-12 (.500) from the floor to lead the team with 21 points. She was also 9-of-12 (.750) from the free throw line in her debut.
Sophomore Whitney Cormier seems to have picked up where she left off last season. The 5-9, Fort Worth product added 15 points on 5-of-11 (.455) shooting, and was 5-of-6 (.833) from the free throw line, against New Orleans. She also led the team with six rebounds, recorded a steal and dished out one assist against the Lady Privateers.
The Ladyjacks return to action Friday when it hosts Tulane. The game against the Green Wave is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
