SFA Falls in Second Game

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team entered the ninth inning Saturday afternoon in a tie ballgame, but Southeastern Louisiana scored four runs in the top half of the inning for a 6-4 win. The Lumberjacks fall to 11-41 (.212) on the season and 3-23 (.115) in Southland Conference play.
SFA trailed by a run heading into the bottom half of the second inning. With one out and junior Clay Britton at first, classmate Chris Smith hit his first career home run with a shot over the left field fence to give the 'Jacks a 2-1 lead. Junior Brian Steinocher made the lead stand over the next four innings pitching shutout baseball, but SLU was able to tie the game in the seventh on a wild pitch. Steinocher finished the game pitching 8.2 innings, surrendering only five hits but walked eight batters.
Steinocher's control failed him in the ninth inning as he hit two batters and walked another. Southeastern Louisiana scratched out two runs against Steinocher in the ninth and added two more against the 'Jacks' bullpen, taking a 6-2 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
SFA battled back for two runs in the ninth inning off three hits and two errors on SLU shortstop Bryan Frichter, but the Lions' bullpen was able to close out the game and preserve the victory. Jeremy Mizell pitched 8.2 innings for the Lions surrendering four runs on eight hits and walked four. Matt Greenwich came on in the ninth and pitched a third of an inning to get the save.
Sophomore Buck Britton went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while junior Steven Hill continued his hot hitting with a 1-for-3 performance and a run batted in. Smith finished the game with the home run and two RBI in four plate appearances.
The 'Jacks' close out the series Sunday afternoon at Jaycees Field. Sunday's game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
