Lumberjacks Fall in One-Run Decision

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - For a second consecutive day, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team has dropped a heartbreaking one-run decision to the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners. The 'Jacks lost to UTSA, 6-5, Sunday afternoon to close out the three-game series. The Lumberjacks are now 8-39 on the season and 3-21 in Southland Conference play.
The Lumberjacks took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth when they scored two runs on three hits. Freshmen Zach Gardner and Ryan Sinclair drove in the SFA runs, but UTSA rallied right back in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead, scoring three runs on three hits.
SFA battled right back to tie the game at 3 in the top half of the fourth inning when junior Steven Hill hit is 12th home run of the season. Hill is currently second in the Southland Conference with his 12 home runs. The game settled into a pitcher's battle after that, as neither team could push across a run over the course of the next three innings.
But unfortunately for Lumberjack fans, lightning struck twice in San Antonio. The 'Runners plated a run in their last at-bat recording a victory in similar fashion to Saturday's game.
Freshman Russ Fornea got the start and went 5.0 innings surrendering only three runs on six hits, while striking out three. Classmate Erik Gregersen came on in relief and went 3.0 strong innings giving up only one run on three hits.
Juniors Chris Smith and Jeremy Arterburn each recorded one hit and scored a run, while Hill finished the afternoon 1-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
The Lumberjacks return to action Tuesday when they host Houston. The game against the Cougars is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
