SFA Falls to Northwestern State

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team dropped the third and final game of the three-game series against Northwestern State, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at Jaycees Field. The Lumberjacks are now 7-32 on the season and 3-18 in Southland Conference play.
The Demons jumped out to a three-run lead after scoring one in the top of the first and two in the top of the third. Northwestern State had been able to keep SFA off the scoreboard until the fifth inning when the 'Jacks mounted a two-out rally.
SFA loaded the bases with two outs for catcher Kevin Croft, who hit Jimmy Heard's pitch down the right field line to score David Jeans and Angel Hernandez. The 'Jacks pulled to within a run, 3-2, but Heard was able to get out of the jam.
SFA head coach Donnie Watson went deep into his bullpen to try and keep the Northwestern State bats off balance. The plan worked until the eighth inning, when Northwestern State scored two runs to take back the three-run advantage, 5-2.
The Lumberjacks didn't go quietly, loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two out. After Johnnie Santangelo made a nice diving catch in center field to save a run to record the second out, junior Chris Smith flied out to left field to end the game.
Freshman Erik Gregersen took the loss after pitching 3.0 innings and surrendering three runs. Junior Steven Hill went 2-for-5 at the plate, while Croft was 1-for-2 with two runs batted in.
The Lumberjacks return to the diamond Tuesday to face Texas-Pan American. The game against the Broncs is slated to begin at 3 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
