NACOGDOCHES - New Mexico prep standout Angelina Dennison has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball and continue her education at Stephen F. Austin announced Ladyjack head coach Lee Ann Riley Wednesday afternoon.
"We are very excited about the addition of Angelina to our program," said Riley. "She is a very athletic player who has the ability to impact a game on both ends of the court. When we began recruiting her, the one thing that impressed our staff was her defense. She just loves to pressure the ball, which fits right in with our style of play. Offensively she has the ability to attack the basket off the dribble, or hit the perimeter shot. Angelina comes from a successful program at Sandia High School led by Coach Susan Kubala, who has done a tremendous job developing her talent."
The 5-9 Albuquerque product guided her high school team to a 90-15 (.857) overall record. Dennison led Sandia to a 27-3 record, a district title and a state semifinal appearance as a senior. She garnered first-team all-district, all-metro and all-state honors for her performance on the court this past season.
As a senior Dennison averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 5 blocks per game, while shooting 45 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line. She also recorded seven double-doubles and one triple-double during the year.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to be part of the successful program that coach Riley is building at SFA," Dennison said. "I enjoyed my visit in February and I really enjoy the style of basketball they play and I hope to be able to make a positive impact."
During her career, Dennison guided Sandia to two district titles and two back-to-back state semifinal appearances. She was a three-time all-metro selection, three-time first-team all-district selection and a two-time first-team all-state honoree. Dennison is a two-time coaches' association defensive player of the year that earned offensive player of the year honors in 2005.
"I'm very happy for Angelina and proud of her decision to attend Stephen F. Austin State University," said Sandia High Head Coach Susan Kubala. "She has had a tremendous high school career winning 86 percent of the time she stepped on the court. She is an unselfish player who gets the job done on both sides of the floor. Angelina takes great pride in being our teams' defensive stopper. She will easily fit into coach Riley's program."
Dennison's signing brings the Ladyjacks' signing class to six. She joins Whitney Cormier, Jackie Domino, Martina Holloway, Lindsey Martina and Karlee Wilson who signed with SFA in November.
