BEAUMONT, Texas - Freshman pitcher Richard Folmer pitched 4.2 innings, surrendering only two hits and no earned runs, while striking out two, but it wasn't enough as Lamar defeated Stephen F. Austin, 8-0, Sunday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Lumberjacks are now 5-22 (.185) on the season and 2-10 (.167) in Southland Conference play.
Folmer had allowed at least one baserunner in every inning but was able to pitch out of trouble. With two on and two out in the fifth inning, it appeared that Folmer worked out of trouble once again, striking out Lamar first baseman Dan Hernandez, but Hernandez was awarded first base on a catcher's interference call. The Cardinals would go on to take a two-run lead in the inning. Lamar added five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a commanding 8-0 lead over SFA.
The 'Jacks offense had no answer for Lamar starter Allen Harrington who went seven innings striking out seven batters in the victory. Folmer dropped to 0-1 on the season.
Freshman Zach Gardner finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate, while Steven Hill, David Jeans, Kyle Freeman and Gabriel Garcia-Serrano each recorded a hit on the afternoon.
The Lumberjacks return to action Tuesday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The game against the Islanders is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
