Late Rally by SFA Comes Up Short

DALLAS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team rallied for four runs in the final two innings, but it wasn't enough as it falls short against Dallas Baptist, 7-4, Tuesday night at Patriot Field. The `Jacks are now 2-9 (.182) on the season.
The `Jacks dug themselves an early hole falling behind by five runs after the first six innings. Dallas Baptist added a run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-0 lead heading into the eighth inning. The Lumberjacks pushed across their first run in the top half of the eighth inning. Freshman Zach Gardner led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Gabe Garcia-Serrano walked, sophomore Buck Britton hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Gardner.
The Patriots answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth to push their lead to 7-1 heading into the final inning. The Lumberjacks mounted another rally in the ninth. With two on and one out, Gardner singled to center field to drive in Chris Smith. Gardner and junior Clay Britton came around to score on a DBU error to close out the scoring.
Gardner finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Chase Sadler also recorded a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Freshman Russ Fornea got the start, but was only able to go three innings. He surrendered four hits and three runs, while striking out one.
The `Jacks return to action Friday when they travel to Little Rock, Ark., for the rematch with UALR. Friday's game against the Trojans is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Baum Stadium.
