The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will be going in search of their third consecutive victory when they travel to Lake Charles, La., Wednesday to face McNeese State. The game against the Cowgirls is slated to begin at 5:15 p.m., from the Burton Coliseum. The Ladyjacks will then return home for a Saturday showdown with Southeastern Louisiana. The rematch against the Lady Lions is slated to begin at 6:15 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks have currently won two-straight games and three of their last four.
SFA vs. the Cowgirls: The Ladyjacks are 34-6 (.850) all-time against McNeese State. SFA has won 14 of the last 17 games between these two teams, but has had some trouble lately, dropping 3 of the last four to the Cowgirls. The Ladyjacks took a 62-50 decision earlier this season in Nacogdoches. The last time the two teams met in Lake Charles, SFA dropped a 68-61 overtime decision to the Cowgirls.
Academic Shootout: The Ladyjack Academic Shootout will be held Saturday Feb. 19th, when the Ladyjacks host Southeastern Louisiana. There will be a pledge table set up at the front gate of the William R. Johnson Coliseum at every home game for fans to sign up. Fans can pledge money for every point the Ladyjacks score against the Lady Lions. The money will go to help raise funds for summer school scholarships.
Extra Basketball: If history is any indicator, the Ladyjacks and Cowgirls would be better suited to skip the first 40 minutes of regulation and head straight to overtime. The last two meetings between SFA and the Cowgirls in Lake Charles, La., have resulted in overtime affairs. McNeese State walked away with an 89-80 victory in the 2002-03 season and a 68-61 win last season.
Reaching a Milestone: The Ladyjacks victory over Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon had a little more significance than other Ladyjack wins. It was the 750th win the program's history (since the NCAA starting tracking records). The Ladyjacks became the fifth school all-time to record 750 wins (Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion and Texas).
Milestone: SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley is only 9 wins shy of career victory No. 200. With her team's 66-56 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday, Riley currently stands at 191 all-time wins in her 10 seasons as a head coach.
Kizzee and Tell: Junior Natalie Kizzee saw extended playing time against Texas State and Sam Houston State and rewarded her coach with a couple of strong outings. Kizzee grabbed a career-high nine rebounds against the Bobcats and followed that up with a career-high eight-point effort against the Bearkats.
Double-Double: Senior Alex Bowman recorded her first career double-double Saturday in the Ladyjacks 66-56 win over Sam Houston State. Bowman scored 12 points and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds. She also dished out four assists, blocked two shots and recorded a steal against the Bearkats. Bowman is averaging 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in her last two contests.
Great Brit: Junior Britany Vinson has been one of SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley's most consistent scorers over the course of the team's last seven games, and on Saturday Vinson kicked it up another notch. Vinson scored 20 points against the Bearkats, nailing seven of her 12 shots (.583). She was also 4-of-8 (.500) from beyond the three-point arc. It was the first time Vinson reached the 20-point plateau since she drained a career-high 27 points in 2002-03 regular-season finale against Northwestern State. Vinson is averaging 12.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game during the stretch.
Up Next ... The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday Feb. 24, when they host Texas-Arlington. The game against the Lady Mavs is slated to begin at 6 p.m., in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA will be right back on the court two days later when they travel to Natchitoches, La., to take on Northwestern State. The game against the Lady Demons is slated to begin at 2 p.m., from Prather Coliseum.
