NACOGDOCHES - After crushing the 2003 defending SLC Tournament Champion Texas State, 91-68, Friday night to close out the 2003-04 regular season, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team enters the 2004 Southland Conference Championships as one of the league's hottest teams. SFA enters the tournament as the league's No. 6 seed, but has won four of the their last five games and seven of their last 11. The Ladyjacks will be in Arlington Tuesday to face third-seeded Texas-Arlington. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., from Texas Hall.
The Ides of March: The Ladyjacks enter the 2004 Southland Conference Championships looking to win their 15th SLC tournament title and make their 18th appearance in the NCAA Championships.
The SLC Bracket: The Ladyjacks enter the 2004 SLC Championships as the league's No. 6 seed and will travel to Arlington, Texas for their first-round game against No. 3 Texas-Arlington. Northwestern State won the SLC regular-season title and will host eighth-seeded Sam Houston State. Fourth-seeded Texas-San Antonio will host the No. 5 seed McNeese State. Louisiana-Monroe was the 2003-04 SLC runner-up and will host seventh-seeded Texas State. All first-round games will tip-off at 7 p.m., Tuesday evening. The semifinals will be Thursday at 7 p.m., while the SLC Championship game will be played Saturday at 1 p.m., hosted by the highest-remaining seed.
Tradition of Winning: The SFA Ladyjack basketball program has been one of the most dominant in women's basketball history. The Ladyjacks are among the nation's all-time top 10 with 738 wins. The Ladyjacks are also among the all-time top 10 with a .740 winning percentage (738-259).
Tradition of Winning in the SLC: As dominant as SFA has been nationally, they have been just as dominant in the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks are the conference's most dominant team, compiling a 258-32 (.890) all-time record. SFA has won 14 of a possible 16 SLC tournament titles and 13 regular-season titles. SFA has also recorded four undefeated seasons in league play and has had 36 players named All-SLC.
Looking Ahead ... If the Ladyjacks win the SLC Championships, they will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The NCAA field of 64 will be announced Sunday Mar. 14th, at 5 p.m, on ESPN.
