NEW ORLEANS - Despite a career-high 15 points and nine rebounds from sophomore Jennifer Simpson, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team dropped a close one to Tulane, 79-72, in the first round of the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic. The loss ended a four-game win streak for SFA and dropped them to 5-4 on the season.
The Ladyjacks hit four of their first five shots as they jumped out to 11-2 lead early on. Tulane rallied to take a 12-11 lead with 12:15 remaining in the first half behind D'Aundra Henry's 25 points and 12 rebounds. But the SFA defense forced Tulane into 10 first-half turnovers as the Ladyjackss took a 37-30 lead into halftime.
The Ladyjacks extended that lead to 39-30 before the Green Wave went on a 14-2 run sparked by Lakethia Hampton's 23 points to reclaim the lead, 44-39, with 16:54 remaining. Tulane built their advantage to as many as 10 points in the second before SFA made a late rally.
The Ladyjacks tied the game at 72 with only 1:08 remaining when senior Alex Bowman nailed her second three-pointer of the game. She finished with six points and five rebounds. But that would be as close as SFA would get due to a costly turnover and some clutch free-throw shooting by the Green Wave.
The Ladyjacks return to action Wednesday night when they will face Georgia State. The game is slated to tip-off at 6 p.m., from Fogelman Arena.
