NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team signed prep stars Ashley Bailey, Lauren Railey and Shelly Swendig to National Letters of Intent announced SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys Wednesday morning. The signing class consists of two outside hitters and a middle blocker.
"We are very excited about this recruiting class," said Humphreys. "The entire class is loaded with size and athleticism. All three will battle for playing time very early in their careers. They have a lot to offer at the outside hitter and middle blocker positions."
Bailey is a 6-0 middle blocker from Mesquite, Texas. She is a multi-sport athlete at Mesquite High School where she was also a standout on the basketball court. Bailey is an all-district selection who received offensive MVP honors last season.
"Ashley is an incredible athlete who will quickly develop as a volleyball player," said Humphreys. "We expect her to catch on quickly and develop into one of the top middle blockers in the Southland Conference because of her athleticism and work ethic."
Railey is a 5-10 outside hitter that comes to Nacogdoches from McKinney High School. Railey has had success both on the high school and club level. She was named the 2004 Skyline MVP after leading her area in kills. She was awarded the 2004 coach's award after guiding the Skyline Juniors club team to a fifth-place finish at junior nationals. She was named McKinney High School team captain and also earned first-team all-district honors.
"We expect Lauren to adjust quickly to NCAA Division I volleyball," said Humphreys. "She has solid experience along with good size, athleticism and ball control. She is a perfect fit for SFA's style of play. Lauren is a great addition to our program."
Swendig is a 6-2 outside hitter from North Mesquite High School, who was a teammate of Railey's on the Skyline Juniors club team, where she received the 2004 coach's award. Swendig earned first-team all-district honors and offensive player of the year honors after leading North Mesquite to the 2004 district title. Swendig also led her prep squad to a 2003 bi-district title.
"Shelly is a good sized outside hitter with tons of potential," said Humphreys. "She has long limbs, good movement and solid ball control. We are looking to Shelly to bring a big blocking presence to our lineup."
The three signees are not only standouts on the court but in the classroom as well. All three are member of the National Honor Society.
