
SFA Falls 5-1 in Final Game Of Series

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (25-22, 9-9) dropped the third game of a three game non-conference series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (23-15, 3-3) Sunday afternoon by a 5-1 final. The Islanders took the series, two games to one.
TAMU-CC scored runs in each of the first three innings to build a 5-0 lead under threatening skies and did not allow a hit to the 'Jacks until a Crista Hargrove single with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Katie Evans hit a solo homer in the top of the first inning off starter Crissy Autry (9-13) to stake Sarah Pauly to an early lead. Pauly held the 'Jacks to only three hits and one run on the afternoon. SFA pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to avoid the shutout.
Autry worked 1.0 inning, leaving after facing two batters in the second inning. She was charged with three runs, two earned, while giving up two hits.
Nicole Carter came on in relief and went the rest of the way allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one in six innings of work.
SFA committed four errors behind its pitching Sunday afternoon.
Crista Hargrove had a two out single in the bottom of the fourth inning for the 'Jacks with Kristen Exline and Jaime Brown picking up the other two SFA hits. Exline had an infield hit in the sixth inning and eventually scored on the Brown single for the 'Jacks only run of the afternoon.
SFA returns to Southland Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Coy Simms Softball Complex hosting Nicholls State in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. That series with conclude with a single game Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
