NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team (24-20, 9-9) came up with some timely hits Wednesday evening in taking both ends of a non-conference doubleheader from Louisiana Tech (10-26, 1-0). The 'Jacks took the first game by a 5-1 final, and won the nightcap, 6-3.
SFA scored five runs on six hits in game one with Tara Hersey leading the way, going three for three at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Hersey had a double among her three hits. The 'Jacks broke on top in the second inning when Crista Hargrove led off with a single, then stole second base. Hersey followed with the first of her three hits, moving Hargrove to third and she also went to second base with some aggressive base running on the throw into the infield. Meryl McGuire then hit a chopper in front of the plate which the Louisiana Tech third baseman tried to get an out at the plate, but Hargrove beat the play. SFA stranded runners at second and third to end the inning.
The 'Jacks came right back in the bottom of the third inning adding two more runs on a hit and a Tech error. Carrie Woydziak reached on an error to start the inning and was moved over on a ground ball by Ragen Rutherford. Brooke Chandler then walked and Tara Hersey came through with a double to gap scoring both runners. SFA added two more runs in the sixth inning on a Hersey single and another Tech error.
Crissy Autry (8-12) worked all seven innings in picking up the win, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out four.
SFA came right back in game two and pounded out nine hits, scoring six runs off Tech starter Kristin Rupp. Devin Cobb (8-3) went 5.1 innings in picking up the win, while Nicole Carter came in and worked 1.2 innings in picking up her third save of the year.
Hersey and Crista Hargrove had two hits each for the 'Jacks with both adding two RBIs. Rutherford and Nicole Carter also picked up RBIs for the 'Jacks in the game two win.
SFA returns to action this weekend hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday starting at 1:00, and a single game Sunday starting at noon at the Coy Simms Softball Complex.
