NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team signed Alex Bowman (Houston, Texas), Jaliyla Muhammad (Philadelphia, Pa.), Tiffany Perkins (Groesbeck, Texas) and Stacey Szymanski (Tomball, Texas) to National Letters of Intent announced head coach Lee Ann Riley.
"We are very excited about this class," said Riley. "Early on in the recruiting process we targeted our needs and we feel this class gives us what we were looking for. We needed to add some junior college players so that we would have experience and these four student-athletes answer that need. Each one comes from quality programs that are used to winning. Their competitiveness and leadership are what we needed to go with our seven returning players."
With only one point guard in the fold the Ladyjacks went out filled that need with the addition of Muhammad. A transfer from Panola College, Muhammad was an all-conference player who looks to create shots for her teammates, averaging 10.4 assists per game. Muhammad also averaged 14.8 points for the Fillies.
Bowman is a 5-10 guard from Kilgore College. She was a two-time all-region and all-conference player for the Lady Rangers. She averaged 10.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game as a sophomore.
Perkins is a 5-9 guard from McLennan Community College. She is the third player in the Ladyjacks signing class with the ability to find the open player, averaging 4.3 assists per game. Perkins was a two-time all-region and all-conference player who also earned honorable mention WBCA All-American honors. Perkins is a proven scorer averaging 14.8 points per game over her two seasons in Waco. She also averaged 4.2 rebounds per game during that stretch.
Szymanski comes to Nacogdoches by way of Tyler Junior College, where she was coached by former Ladyjack Trenia Tillis. Szymanski averaged 8.0 points per game and pulled down 5.2 rebounds per game while leading the Texas Eastern Conference in field-goal percentage at 61 percent. The 6-0 post is also a solid free-throw shooter averaging 77 percent from the charity stripe.
