ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior Yolanda Grant (Flatonia, Texas) scored a team-high 15 points and dished out five assists but it wasn't enough as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team lost to Texas-Arlington, 69-61, Thursday night. The Ladyjacks are now 8-10 overall and 8-3 in the Southland Conference.
The Mavericks jumped out of the gate early and built a 13-point advantage with 7:41 remaining in the first half. The Ladyjacks went on a 13-0 run, capped by a Kirby Killingsworth (Longview, Texas) three-pointer at the 3:25 mark of the half. UTA regained a two-point advantage three seconds later on two Chrondra Reagan free throws. The Ladyjacks took their first lead of the game when freshman Britany Vinson (Prattville, Ala.) knocked down a three pointer with only 2:53 remaining the half. The Ladyjacks added another basket and went into the intermission with a three-point advantage, 33-30.
The Mavericks started the second half in similar fashion to the first going on an 8-2 run over the first 2:30 of the second half to regain the lead. The Mavericks built the lead back to 13 points led by Sheena Johnson's 13 points and 15 rebounds. But the Ladyjacks responded with a 10-0 run to get the lead back down to three points, 60-57, with 4:10 in the game. The Ladyjacks cut the lead to one point, 62-61, with only 1:34 left but the Mavericks hit their free throws down the stretch to put the game on ice.
Killingsworth finished the game with 14 points, while Vinson added 10 points. Senior Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas) became the school's all-time single-season blocks leader with her five blocks tonight to give her 57 for the season. She also added two points and 10 rebounds.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday against McNeese State. The game is set to tip off at 5:30 p.m., from the Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, La.
