The SFA softball team opened the 2003 season Saturday with a pair of 8-0 wins over Texas Southern, in Houston. SFA (2-0) got great pitching and good hitting in cruising to the wins. Several of the newcomers to the 2003 team made their presence felt right away as Crissy Autry, a junior college transfer from Galveston College tosssed a no-nitter, and freshman Lee Lara led the SFA attack with four hits.
Autry (1-0) went six innings, struck out ten, walked one and did not allow a hit in picking up her first win with the 'Jacks. She was also 1-1 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Devin Cobb and Nicole Carter teamed to shutout the Tigers in the other game Saturday allowing only four hits in five innings of work. Cobb (1-0) posted two strikeouts while not allowing a walk. Carter threw two innings, allowing two hits, no walks, but did hit two batters.
Lee Lara led the charge at the plate, going 4-6 in her first collegiate action. Included in Lara's four hits were three for extra bases, two doubles and a home run. She also posted five RBIs in the doubleheader. Jaime Brown, an outfielder from Houston, also went 2-3 in her return from an injury a year ago. Brown also scored two runs and drove in a pair of runs in the win.
SFA returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Texas A&M.
