Ladyjacks Holds Off UTA in a Thriller Yolanda Grant leads the way with career-high 15 points
NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack women's basketball team held off Texas-Arlington in a back-n-forth affair, 57-56, Saturday evening. The Ladyjacks improve to 8-8 (.500) overall and 8-1 (.889) in the Southland Conference.
The Ladyjacks opened up the game on fire building a eight-point advantage, 15-7, with 12:05 in the first half. The Mavericks then went on an 18-2 run over the next 9:44 of the first half, to build a 25-15 lead with 4:44 left in the half. SFA cut the lead to six at halftime, 25-19.
The Ladyjacks opened the second half and regained a one-point advantage, with 15:06 remaining, led by senior Yolanda Grant's (Flatonia, Texas) career-high 15 points. From that point on, the two teams battled for a one-point advantage. SFA claimed a one-point advantage on a jumper by senior Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas), to give SFA a 57-56 lead. Collins finished the game with 13 points, four rebounds and four blocks. The score remained 57-56 and UTA had the ball with only 11 second remaining. The Mavericks ran the clock down to two seconds when Sheena Johnson put up the shot, only to have it blocked by Collins as the final horn sounded.
Johnson led the way for the Mavericks with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Nathesia Wright (Arlington, Texas) added 11 points in the victorious effort.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday Feb. 1st against Northwestern State. The game is slated to get underway at 2 p.m., from Prather Coliseum.
