Champions Ladyjacks win 11th Southland Conference Crown
NACOGDOCHES - It was business as usual for the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team Monday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks had five players in double-figure scoring and forced 21 Lady Demon turnovers to put Northwestern State away, 88-68. The Ladyjacks win the 2002 Southland Conference title with an 21-5 (.808 win percentage) overall record and an 18-1 (.947) league mark.
In many ways the game resembled Saturday night's victory over Louisiana-Monroe. Senior Chaquita Dilworth (Temple, Texas) led all scorers with 24 points, classmate Latisha Prater (Cottonport, La.) recorded another double-double (her fourth consecutive) and junior Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas) tied a school record with six blocks.
SFA jumped out of the gate on fire building a nine-point lead, 12-3, less than three minutes into the contest. Northwestern State tried to keep the game close with Tiffany Hall's 12 points and game-high 21 rebounds. The Lady Demons cut the lead to five points before SFA went on a 12-5 run to close out the first half, leading 45-33 at the intermission.
It was more of the same in the second half as SFA pushed the lead to 20 points on Dilworth's 24 points and 10 rebounds. Prater added 14 points and 14 rebounds. Angela Davidson continued her strong play against the Ladyjacks this season with a 21-point performance but it wasn't enough as the Ladyjacks traded baskets with Northwestern State down the stretch.
Collins scored 13 points to go along with her six blocks. Senior Jessica Guild (Flower Mound, Texas) scored 14 points and added six steals and five assists. Junior Nathesia Wright (Arlington, Texas) poured in 10 points and pulled down four rebounds.
The Ladyjacks close out the 2001-02 regular season Saturday against Texas-Arlington Saturday at 4 p.m., in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Admission is free to students.
