
Ladyjacks Survive Late Rally From ULM

MONROE, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team rolled into Monroe, La., Saturday to open the 2002-03 Southland Conference season and rolled out with a 64-59 decision. It was the Ladyjacks' first victory of the season, as they improve to 1-7 (.125) overall and 1-0 in the SLC.
SFA received big games from seniors Nathesia Wright (Arlington, Texas) and Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas). Both players recorded a double-double as Wright scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Collins finished the game with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw five lead changes and five ties. The Ladyjacks took the final lead of the half on two free throws by freshman Kendria Smith (Shreveport, La.) with 1:11 remaining before the intermission. The Ladyjacks went into the break leading by two, 29-27.
The Ladyjacks' lead remained at two when SFA went on a 16-2 run with 15:35 remaining in the game to open up a 14-point advantage, 51-37. But the Lady Indians mounted one last charge. ULM battled back and cut the deficit to only one point, 60-59, with 46 seconds remaining, behind Nikki LaCour's 14 points and 10 rebounds. But freshman Kirby Killingsworth (Longview, Texas) drained a three-pointer with only 21 seconds remaining to put the game on ice. Killingsworth finished the game with 11 points, all coming in the second half, and six rebounds.
Freshman Jamie Boles (Keller, Texas) added eight points and nine rebounds. The Lady Indians' Nina Randle scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Nicole Cox added 14 points.
The Ladyjacks return to action Monday when they return home to take on Southwest Texas. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m., from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
