NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team was victorious in its final tune-up for the 2002-03 regular season Monday night. SFA came from behind to defeat RTU Klondaika, 67-63, to sweep both of their exhibition games.
The Ladyjack offense struggled in the first half, shooting only 24 percent, they trailed by 11 points with only 3:28 left before halftime. But it was a blocked shot by freshman Kendria Smith (Shreveport, La.) that sparked a Ladyjack rally. The Ladyjacks outscored the team from Riga, Latvia, 9-0, over the final 3:27 to go into the intermission only down by two, 34-32.
The Ladyjacks stepped up the offense and the defense in the second half of action. SFA was 15-of-33 (.455) in the second half led by senior Nathesia Wright's (Arlington, Texas) 14 points. Wright also added eight points, five assists and four steals. Freshman LaToya Mills (Houston, Texas) recorded her second-straight double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.
RTU Klondaika stayed close behind Zane Teilane's 28 points and 14 rebounds. She was one of three players for RTU Klondaika to score in double figures. But they didn't have enough to slow down the Ladyjacks, as SFA finished the game shooting .338 from the field.
Freshman Britany Vinson (Prattville, Ala.) had another solid game at the point, scoring 13 points and dishing out four assists. Senior Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas) added 11 points, pulled down four rebounds and blocked a shot.
The Ladyjacks kickoff the 2002-03 regular season Nov. 23rd, against No. 16 (ESPN/USA Today poll) Arkansas. The game is slated to get underway at 7 p.m., from Fayetteville, Ark.
