NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball coach Jennifer Poulsen announced today the signing of Ragen Rutherford to a letter of intent to play softball and continue her education at the university this fall. Rutherford is the second student-athlete signed to play for the Ladyjacks since Poulsen took over earlier this month.
"I am very pleased with the addition of Ragen to the team. She is the type of player that should join the team and make an immediate impact. Her bat will be in the lineup as often as possible," said Poulsen. The first year head coach added that Rutherford could see duty as a utility player filling several roles on the team.
Rutherford will join the Ladyjacks after a four year career at North Richland Hills High School. She helped the team to a state title as a sophomore and helped the team to Area titles as both a junior and senior. The switch-hitting third baseman was also a three-time All-District and All-Area selection her final three years.
Rutherford earned a spot following her senior season to the Dallas-Fort Worth Area All-Star Team, batting .298 for the season with 27 RBIs and eleven stolen bases in fourteen attempts. During the course of her four year career, Rutherford struck out only 17 times.
A member of the National Honor Society and Who's Who Among American High School Students, Rutherford graduated with a 3.79 GPA at North Richland Hills High School.
