The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team dropped the third game of a key Southland Conference home series to Nicholls State, 3-0 Saturday afternoon, at Coy Simms Softball Complex. With the loss, the Ladyjacks fall to 17-26 for the season, and 8-13 in SLC play. With only six conference games remaining, the Ladyjacks are now in danger of not qualifying for the SLC post season tournament. The top six teams in the league standings qualify for post season play.
It was once again a case of not coming up with a hit when they needed it Saturday afternoon as SFA stranded 11 base runners in the game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning in a scoreless tie, the Ladyjacks managed to load the bases with none out, but failed to get a run across. Angela Froboese hit into a fielder's choice, forcing pinch runner Yvette Bass out at the plate, then freshman Kym Kling was called out on strikes to end the threat.
Nicholls State managed to put four hits together in their half of the sixth inning when three straight infield singles laded the bases with nobody out. A wild pitch allowed one run to score, then Jill Chabert doubled over the head of left fielder Sascha Taylor to drive in a pair of runs and put Nicholls State up 3-0.
The Ladyjacks threatened again in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking advantage of two Nicholls State errors to load the bases with two outs, but failed once again to get the hit when they needed it, and lost 3-0.
SFA plays a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon with Centenary at the Coy Simms Softball complex, starting at 4:00 p.m.
