Chaquita Dilworth scored a game-high 14 points to lead three players in double figures as Stephen F. Austin defeated a cold-shooting Southeastern Louisiana University, 57-39, in a Southland Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
Nicole Guild came off the bench to score 13 points and Latisha Prater added 10 as SFA (6-4, 3-0 SLC) won its fourth straight game while Southeastern fell to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the SLC.
Freshman Dana Noto, who led Southeastern with a career-high 13 points, cut the SFA lead to 10-8 with an off-balance jumper with 10:08 remaining in the first half. The Lady Lions then went closed out the half missing their final 13 shots as the Ladyjacks built a 25-11 halftime lead and were never threatened from there.
Southeastern, which shot a season-low 23.5 percent in a 46-41 loss at McNeese State last Saturday, fared worse against the Ladyjacks hitting on just 10-of-53 shots (18.9 percent) in the game and 2-for-25 (8.0 percent) in the first half.
The Ladyjacks took a 39-16 lead on Nicole Guild's jumper with 12:43 remaining before Southeastern used an 8-0 run capped by two free throws by Shanna Achord. However, SFA pulled away and took its biggest lead of the game, 52-26, on a Dilworth jumper in the lane with 5:55 left. Despite its cold shooting, Southeastern played solid on defense holding the Ladyjacks to 34 percent from the floor and 2-for-15 from behind the 3-point arc. Jessica Guild, the Ladyjacks' leading scorer (10.4 ppg) coming into the game, was held to five points after averaging 17.0 in the first two SLC games. Tamika Williams tied a career-high with nine rebounds for Southeastern while Pam Mathews grabbed eight boards.
SFA's Nathesia Wright led all players with 11 rebounds in the contest as the Ladyjacks held a 48-45 advantage on the boards and forced 19 turnovers.
The Ladyjacks return to action Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. as they continue their south Louisiana roadswing with a game at Nicholls State.
