DALLAS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team picked up its second win of the season Saturday night, beating Western Illinois, 72-49. The Ladyjacks are 2-3 overall this season.
It was the same story offensively for the Ladyjacks in the first half. SFA was only 6-19 (.316 percent) from the floor. But unlike the previous night, the Ladyjacks were going to the free-throw line and making good on their opportunities. SFA was 25-of-31 (.806 percent) from the charity stripe on the night.
The score was tied at four with 11 minutes and 16 seconds remaining in the second half when the Ladyjacks picked up the intensity and went on an 8-0 run. The Ladyjacks cruised to the intermission with a 24-15 lead behind senior Jessica Guild's 15 points and six rebounds.
The Westerwinds' Jessica Cook tried to get WIU back into the contest with her 12 second-half points but it wasn't enough as the Ladyjacks never let the lead slip below 14 points. The Ladyjacks finished the game 22-of-43 (.512) from the floor.
Senior Latisha Prater continues to play well for SFA as she recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Junior Nathesia Wright struck for 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting.
"The only difference between tonight and last night is we made our shots," said SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley. "Our defense has played hard and kept us in some games but finally we started knocking down some shots and it really relaxed our kids. Tonight we executed, making the extra pass, rotated the ball and took the time to find the open person."
SFA concludes its season-opening six-game road swing at UC Santa Barbara on Friday Dec. 7 against the Gauchos. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 7 (9 p.m. Texas time) p.m., from the Thunderdome.
