AUBURN, Ala. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday with a 66-62 win over Charleston Southern in the Kroger Thanksgiving Classic consolation game. The Ladyjacks are now 1-2 overall.
SFA led by only point, 6-5, when it went on a 23-9 run sparked by an Amy Collins (San Antonio, Texas) jumper. Collins finished the game with eight points and six rebounds. The Ladyjacks maintained their double-digit lead behind junior Nathesia Wright's (Arlington, Texas) 15 points and five rebounds. Wright was one of three Ladyjacks to finish with double-figures in points.
The Buccaneers clawed their way back into the game behind Stacy Mueller and her game-high 17 points. She also added seven rebounds but the Ladyjacks put the game on ice hitting their final seven free throws down the stretch.
Senior Latisha Prater (Cotton Port, La.) scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Senior Chaquita Dilworth (Temple, Texas) finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds.
"I felt that this was the first time that we came out and played with emotion," said SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley. "We have to play with intensity and emotion for a whole game. I thought our defense played well today. We got our hands on the ball and caused 23 turnovers. I thought we came out and played really aggressive."
The Ladyjacks look to make it two wins in a row against Chattanooga Friday in the first round of the SMU Hoops of the Cure Classic in Dallas, Texas. The game is slated to begin at 5 p.m., from the Moody Coliseum.
