Plano, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team was picked to win the Southland Conference in a poll released by the league Friday.
SFA received seven first-place votes and 96 points from the league's coaches outdistancing themselves from Northwestern State who received two first-place votes and 86 points for second place.
Among the league's sports information director's, SFA received nine first-place votes and tallied 117 points for the top spot. Northwestern State received two first-place votes and garnered 102 points for second-place in the poll.
"It's exciting that the expectations for this team are still there," said first-year head coach Lee Ann Riley. "We are a new staff and we know that SFA is a special place with a strong tradition of winning. I don't put a lot of stock in preseason polls, we have yet to coach these kids in a game but we're excited for the upcoming season. We'll just have to play the games and see who's on top come the end of the season."
SFA will tipoff the 2001-02 season Friday Nov. 9, at Florida International, in the first round of the Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., from Golden Panther Arena.
