Jacks Fall to Cowgirls

LAKE CHARLES, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team traveled to Lake Charles to begin their series against the McNeese Cowgirls Friday night.
The Cowgirls got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first, 2-0. After a scoreless second inning, SFA responded in the top of the third with a leadoff single to left field from Lilly Bean then pinch runner, Alexis Grigsby was bunted over to third by Kylie Bishop. Then Jamie Varga crushed a triple down the right field line to bring in Grigsby, 2-1. Ellie Vance grounded out to second which gave Varga enough time to cross home plate to tie the game up, 2-2. McNeese scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Bean and Bishop began the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles through the right side, then Varga drew a walk to load up the bases for Vance who hit an RBI single to shortstop, 5-3. The Cowgirls added two more in the bottom of the fifth, 7-3. Ella Hill hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Kaylee Paul for SFA's fourth run, 7-4. McNeese added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, 9-4.
POSTGAME NOTES
• Five Lumberjacks recorded a hit.
• Lilly Bean led the team with two hits and Jamie Varga hit a triple.
• Ellie Vance led SFA with two RBIs and Varga and Ella Hill each recorded one.
• Amelia Hatthorn pitched a complete game and struck out three batters.
UP NEXT
The Lumberjacks will wrap up their series tomorrow, April 18 at 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Note that time has been moved up due to impending weather.
