
Ladyjacks Open Conference Play with Islanders and Vaqueros

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball program opens Southland Conference play on Wednesday in Corpus Christi and then will return home for a Saturday matchup with the UTRGV Vaqueros.
WHERE TO TUNE IN
• Both matches this week will be streamed on ESPN+. Greg Miller and Brittany Castledine will be on the call for Saturday's match against UTRGV.
• Greg Miller will be live on sfavolleyblog.net for Wednesday night's match at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
ABOUT THE LADYJACKS
• Head Coach Debbie Humphreys secured her 850th career win in a five-set thriller against Abilene Christian on September 5.
• With John Cook (NEB) and Mary Wise (FLA) announcing their retirements over the summer, Coach Humphreys is now one of two active coaches in Division I to win over 800 matches and is the only active coach to win 800 at one institution. She has the second most wins among active DI coaches with 850.
• The 'Jacks finished a tough non-conference slate with a 5-6 record. They picked up wins over UTSA, Texas State, Louisiana, Abilene Christian, and Tarleton. SFA is coming off hosting No. 10 SMU and UTEP in the second SFA Tournament.
SCOUTING TAMU-CORPUS CHRISTI
• The defending SLC Tournament Champions wrapped their non-conference schedule with a 4-8 record. The Islanders picked up wins over Alabama State, Tarleton, and Prairie View (x2).
• Senior middle blocker, Katelyn Krienke leads the Islanders with 93 kills (2.21 per set).
• Sophomore setter, Virginia Van Der Werff leads the 5-1 offense for TAMU-CC with 415 assists (9.43 per set) and leads the conference in both categories. She also leads the team with 27 aces (0.61 per set) which ranks her second in the conference.
• Redshirt sophomore OH/L, Brooklyn Jaeger leads the back line with 191 digs (4.44 per set) and is fourth in the conference in digs per set but third in total digs.
• Krienke leads the team with 23 blocks followed by another senior middle blocker, Kaitlyn Baumann who has 20 blocks.
• Freshman RS/OH, Tatum Mason leads the conference in hitting percentage at .342, Baumann is sixth with .304.
SCOUTING UTRGV
• UTRGV finished their non-conference schedule with a 5-6 record, picking up wins over LIU, Northern Kentucky, Akron, William & Mary, and Delaware State.
• The Vaqueros open SLC play hosting Lamar on Wednesday at 12 p.m. before heading up to Nacogdoches for a noon Saturday match.
• Sophomore outside hitter, Martina Franco leads the team with 91 kills (3.64 per set). She ranks third in the conference in kills per set, but ninth in total kills.
• Junior setter, Isabella Costantini leads the Vaqueros 5-1 offense with 345 assists (9.08 per set) which puts her in third in the conference in both categories. She also leads the team with 14 aces which has her in eighth for both aces and aces per set.
• Junior libero, Celianiz Cabranes heads up the back line with 176 digs (4.63 per set) which ranks her third in the conference in digs per set and fourth in total digs.
• At the net the Vaqueros have a three-headed monster with junior middle blocker, Julianna Bryant, junior middle blocker, Aaliyah Snead, and senior right side, Valentine Sarti Cipriani each recording over 20 blocks. Bryant has 29 blocks while Snead has 28 and Sarti Cipriani has 23.
• Snead is also currently fourth in the conference with a .306 hitting percentage.
• Bryant is fourth in the conference with 1.12 blocks per set and ninth in total blocks.
SERIES HISTORY
• This will the 30th clash between the 'Jacks and Islanders. SFA currently leads the series 20-9, but TAMU-CC won the most recent matchup 3-1 in the semifinals of the SLC Tournament last season in Hammond, Louisiana.
• UTRGV and SFA will match up for the 20th time. The Ladyjacks hold an impressive 18-1 series lead and are currently riding a six-game win streak against the Vaqueros. SFA is a perfect 10-0 hosting UTRGV in the Pressure Cooker.
HOME COOKING
• Last weekend SFA hosted the second SFA Tournament against #10 SMU and UTEP.
• SMU was the first ranked opponent to enter the Pressure Cooker since #14 Arkansas on November 2, 1998.
• 'Jack Nation showed up loud and proud as they set a home attendance record at 1,324 beating the previous record of 1,206 against Sam Houston in 2023.
IN LIKE FLYNN
• At the Loyola Invitational, senior setter Jayden Flynn passed former teammate Maddy Bourque for eighth in All-Time Assists at SFA.
• Flynn currently has 2263 assists and is chasing Terri Sherrill who has 2431 career assists.
• Flynn also broke into the top 10 for career aces as well. She currently is tied for ninth with Stephanie Figgers at 141 aces.
RETURNEE RUNDOWN
• The 'Jacks return 84.58% of their offense and 77.24% of their defense from the 2024.
• SFA's 11 returning players accounted for 89.58% of sets played, 94.89% of kills, 72.06% of digs, 74.31% of assists, 96.72% of blocks, 78.33% of aces, and 91.36% of points scored.
• All three First Team-SLC Selections return for the 2025 season.
