
Ladyjacks Axe the Islanders to Begin Conference Play

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Volleyball program traveled to the island to face off against the defending SLC tournament champions, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders.
SFA quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to kills from Jordan Henderson, Ilana de Assis and an ace from Jayden Flynn. TAMU-CC responded by tying up the match at four. With the 'Jacks holding a slim lead, the Islanders went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-10 lead. From there TAMU-CC held a comfortable lead and secured the final three points to win the first set 25-15.
In the second set, the 'Jacks once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead. However, after that neither team held more than a two-point lead until SFA went on a 6-1 spurt to take a 20-17 lead. Both teams traded blows until the end of the set, but a kill by Kennedy Jones secured a 25-21 second set victory for the 'Jacks and tied up the match.
The third set was a battle as neither team held more than a four-point lead until the 'Jacks went on a 7-1 spurt that included two aces from Caroline Kahle, 18-10. SFA continued their offensive dominance on a 6-1 run as they cruised to a 25-13 third set victory.
With the 'Jacks up 6-5, SFA went on a 7-1 run to take a commanding 13-6 lead. SFA continued to dominate by ending the match on an incredible 9-0 run and secured the match win off a 25-10 fourth set victory that was capped off by a kill from de Assis.
POSTGAME NOTES
• This is the 12th year in a row the 'Jacks start conference play 1-0.
• SFA moves to a 21-9 record against the Islanders and an 8-5 record in Corpus Christi.
• The 'Jacks led the Islanders in the major stats categories; kills (51-39), aces (11-3), blocks (11-2), assists (47-37), digs (54-49), and hitting percentage (.285-.153).
• Ilana de Assis led the team with 14 kills, followed by Katherine Holtman and Molly Cravens with eight.
• Jayden Flynn led the team with 28 assists followed by Zoe Gun with 12.
• Kyanna Creecy set a new season high with eight blocks.
• Caroline Kahle led the back line with 16 digs and tied with Gun for the team lead with three aces.
