
SFA Falls to No. 10 SMU in Front of Record-Breaking Crowd

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin volleyball program hosted the. No. 10 SMU Mustangs to begin the second SFA Tournament.
This is the first time SFA hosted a ranked opponent since No. 14 Arkansas came to the Pressure Cooker on November 2, 1998. SMU got out to a slim 4-3 lead, but SFA rattled off three straight points with a kill from Molly Cravens and back-to-back kills from Kennedy Jones. Both teams traded blows until SMU went on a four-point spurt to take a 12-9 lead. The Ladyjacks responded with a three-point mini run and tied up the set at 12 with back-to-back aces from Jayden Flynn, which moves her into eighth in all-time aces at SFA. The 'Jacks kept it close as they fed off the energy from a record-breaking crowd, but SMU finished off the first set on a 7-3 run to take a 25-22 first set victory.
Both teams were successful in siding out at the beginning of set two. However, the Mustangs went on a blistering 10-0 run to take a commanding 18-7 lead and did not look back. SMU finished the second set on a four-point run, 25-11.
In the third, the Mustangs quickly jumped out to an 11-6 lead. SFA responded with a kill from Camryn Hill and an impressive corner shot from Jayden Flynn for a kill, 11-8. Later in the set SMU rattled off five points to extend their lead to double digits, 22-12. A kill from Malaya Jones secured a three-set sweep for No. 10 SMU.
POSTGAME NOTES
• SFA leads the series 10-6 and moves to a 3-2 home record.
• Kennedy Jones led the team with nine kills, while Jordan Henderson led the team with a .313 attack percentage.
• Zoe Gun led the offense with 12 assists followed by eight from Flynn.
• Flynn led the team with two aces and is now eighth in all-time aces. She also led the back line defense with 10 digs.
• Kyanna Creecy led the 'Jacks with four blocks.
UP NEXT
SFA will finish their non-conference slate with UTEP on Saturday, September 20 at 12:00 p.m. This will be the ninth matchup between the Ladyjacks and Miners.
