SFA Host Sam Houston in Battle of the Piney Woods Season Opener

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin Women's Soccer kicks off the home opener against Sam Houston in the Battle of the Piney Woods at 7:00 P.M. on August 14.
The 'Jacks look to start the season off by setting the tone against Sam Houston as both squads are coming into the year with a new head coach at the helm. Ashley Whittemore makes her head coaching debut for the Lumberjacks as SFA looks to defend their Southland Conference title from last season. Sam Houston concluded their season with an 8-7-3 record and finished fourth in CUSA, as they welcome in former Texas Southern head coach Kendall Ayers.
SFA holds a 21-4-1 series lead against SHSU as the last match concluded in a 1-1 draw in Huntsville on August 15, 2024. The previous ten matchups for the 'Jacks have eight wins, one loss, and one tie, with the last win coming off a 1-0 game in Nacogdoches on September 23, 2022.
The Lumberjacks have outscored the Bearkats 69-19 since their very first matchup on September 28, 2004, when SFA walked away with a 5-0 victory. The 'Jacks largest margin of victory was 6-0 on two different occasions, both occurring in Nacogdoches.
Junior midfielder, Brielle Buchanan, makes her return to SFA as she leads the returners in goals scored last season, with eight. Sierra McCluer is coming back for her sophomore season as she pulled in 36 saves during the 2024 season, playing in 14 matches for the Lumberjacks. Senior transfer, Logan Heausler, will appear in her SFA debut with 15 goals and seven assists in her previous three seasons at Oklahoma State. The Lumberjacks tallied 60 goals last season and finished fifth in the nation for saves per game, and capped off the season with eight clean sheets.
