A Look at the Lumberjacks
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks come into this game sitting at 12-30 overall and 4-20 in the Southland. Last weekend, the 'Jacks lost two of three against the Northwestern State Demons. After the midweek game against the Tigers, the 'Jacks will stay in Louisiana to take on the conference-leading McNeese Cowboys in a three-game series over the weekend. Once they are done taking on the Cowboys, the 'Jacks will head home to wrap up regular season play with a series against Incarnate Word.
Josh Ibe remains the focal point of the 'Jacks offense. This weekend against Northwestern State, Josh hit .455 with a 1.045 OPS. He had five hits, a double, a walk, and two RBI over the three games. Ibe has consistently been the best hitter in the 'Jacks lineup, leading the Lumberjacks in multiple different offensive categories. He's first in batting average (.354), OPS (1.181), slugging percentage (.715), on-base percentage (.466), home runs (12), RBI (38), runs (29), hits (46), total bases (93), and walks (24). Josh is leading the SLC in slugging percentage, third in slugging percentage, and is tied for third in home runs. Junior second baseman Kevin Duran had a huge series this weekend, hitting .600 with a 1.200 OPS. In his ten at-bats, Kevin picked up six hits while scoring two runs and driving in one. Duran is currently second on the team in batting average (.304) and fourth in OPS (.798). He's also been a threat on the bases, as his four steals are tied for fourth on the team. Duran has been on fire since the calendar turned to April, hitting .408 with a .998 OPS. His 20 hits during the month are leading the team, while his ten runs are fourth. Junior third baseman Julian Swift has been a constant in the Lumberjacks lineup. Last weekend against Northwestern State, Julian hit .333 with a .750 OPS. He also picked up two RBI while not striking out. Swift has started 36 games for the Lumberjacks, second on the team to Mark Henning. On the year, Julian has a .297 batting average, third on the team, and is second on the team with eight doubles. His 57 total bases are third, and he currently ranks as the toughest to strike out in the Southland Conference, having struck out only eight times in 148 at-bats. Finally, freshman outfielder Cermodrick Bland continues to play well. Like Duran, Bland has been a tough out in April, as he's hitting .419 with a .988 OPS during the month. Cermodrick currently ranks fourth and leads the team with 16 stolen bases on the year.
On the pitching side, Cody Templeton returned to form last Saturday, dominating the Demons. He pitched a complete game while allowing only one unearned run. He gave up four hits, one walk, and struck out eight. This is Cody's second complete game this year, as he shut out Lamar earlier in the season. The conference took notice, as he was named Southland Pitcher of the Week for the second time this year. Before Saturday, Cody had been struggling a little bit, but he got back to what he was doing earlier in the season and dominated the Demons bats the entire game. On the year, Templeton has a 4.00 ERA over a team-leading 72 innings. His WHIP is first among starters at 1.31, and his 51 strikeouts lead the SFA pitching staff.
