NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball team (9-11, 0-0) returns home for the first time this season as they get set to open Southland Conference play this weekend, playing host to Southland opponent Nicholls State University (7-13, 0-0) for a three-game weekend home opener series.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks will look to bounce back from a midweek loss to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs their last time out. The midweek game on Tuesday in Ruston ended a stretch of 20 consecutive road matches for the Lumberjacks to start the season as they now look ahead to the beginning of both conference play and the luxury of playing at home, as seven of the next eight games for SFA will be at SFA Softball Field. Despite the loss to the Bulldogs on Tuesday, the Lumberjack offense continues to rack in the hits as they have now tallied seven or more hits in four straight games, while recording multiple extra-base hits in four consecutive games as well. SFA will now look to carry their offensive momentum back home and start conference play on a strong foot.
Colonels at a Glance:
The Nicholls State University Colonels will also be looking to get back in the win column this weekend in the Piney Woods as they are in the midst of a four-game losing skid. The Colonels played their last tournament of the season last weekend as they traveled to Oxford, Mississippi to compete in the Ole Miss Classic. The Colonels opened the tournament with a 10-5 win over Murray State, but had their work cut out for them in the last four games with two games against the Ole Miss Rebels. The Colonels non-conference schedule this season has been packed with household name schools as they have already faced off with no. 8 ranked Tennessee, Penn State, and no. 5 ranked LSU, in addition to Ole Miss.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Mikaelah Burkland has been tearing the cover off the softball for the 'Jacks lately as she extended her hitting streak to seven games on Tuesday night, recording her third multi-hit effort during the streak. Jamie Varga has been just as efficient at the plate as she extended her own hitting streak to three games, while Hope Lusk has recorded a hit in three of her last four games, and has come through in the clutch for SFA as she leads the team with 12 RBIs. Adelyn Becerra picked up her first double of the season against the Bulldogs and has now recorded back-to-back multi-hit efforts at the dish for the Lumberjacks. Jordyn Ages and Brooke Gainous combined to punch out five Bulldogs on Tuesday evening, marking the third straight game the SFA pitching staff has struck out at least five hitters.
Scouting Report-Colonels:
Claire Sisco has been a do-it-all hitter for Nicholls this season as she has the Colonels lone homerun this season while leading the team in batting average (.377), on-base percentage (1.002), slugging percentage (.509), and hits (20). Reagan Heflin has been an extra-base machine for the Colonels as she has a team-high five doubles, and one triple, while Riley Rutherford leads the team with 11 RBIs. Molly Yoo leads the pitching effort in the circle for Nicholls as she has tossed 37.2 innings and has struck out 21 batters this year.
Series:
This weekend's home opener for SFA will see these two Southland foes square off for the 39th-41st all-time meetings. The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series 22-16 and swept the Colonels in their most recent meeting in 2021 as they scored 27 runs over three games at SFA Softball Field.
