
Lumberjacks Split Doubleheader Against Colonels

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (10-12, 1-1 SLC) opened their 2025 home schedule with a doubleheader against the Nicholls Colonels (8-14, 1-1 SLC).
Game 1:
With Alexis Telford making her return to the circle, the 'Jacks brought the offensive support in the first inning. Hope Lusk, Ellie Vance, and Adelyn Becerra got on base early with walks which brought up Kyi'Marri Ester with bases loaded and two outs. Ester delivered with a single up the middle that cleared the bases after a throwing error from the catcher to third base got out to right field, 3-0. With Ester on third, Chloe Reneau dropped in a bloop single in front of the left fielder which added another run for the 'Jacks, 4-0.
The next runs for SFA came in the bottom of the third after back-to-back singles from Lilly Bean and Becerra. This brought Ester back up to the plate with an opportunity to do some more damage, and she did just that as she hit a single to right field which brought in both runners for her fourth and fifth RBIs of the game, 6-0. SFA tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth after Lusk reached on an error by the shortstop, Camryn Milley stepped up into the box with a runner on first and one out. Milley smoked a double to left field which scored Lusk, 7-0. Telford kept dealing with a three-up, three-down top of the sixth. Ester continued her hot streak in the bottom of the sixth as she hit a leadoff triple to right field. Reneau then reach on an error from the first baseman and then stole second. Jamie Varga followed with a walk-off single to center field that brought in Ester to score the run-rule game-winning run, 8-0.

Game 2:
Nicholls responded quickly to a run-rule loss as they scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Colonels followed that up with another run in the top of the third inning, 2-0. SFA responded in the bottom of the third with a leadoff walk from Varga, then a successful bunt from Kaylee Paul, then Mikaelah Burkland was hit by a pitch to load up the bases for Lusk. Lusk reached on a fielder's choice as the Colonels threw out Varga at home to prevent the 'Jacks from scoring. However, SFA would not be denied as Paul scored on a wild pitch, 2-1. Both offenses struggled to score until the top of the seventh when Nicholls scored three runs to extend their lead, 4-1.

SFA will face-off against the Colonels with a chance to win their first Southland Conference series tomorrow, March 8th at 9:00 a.m.
