NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball team (11-13, 1-2 SLC) open up their four-game homestand this weekend as they play host to visiting Southland rival Lamar University (14-10, 2-1 SLC) in a three-game weekend series at SFA Softball Field.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks offense bounced back in a big way on Tuesday afternoon in Prairie View as they leapt on the Prairie View A&M Panthers with a six-run second inning to help power them to an eventual 9-2 road win. The SFA offense kept their bats scorching hot as they tallied eight hits, making their seventh time in their last eight games they have recorded seven or more hits, while drawing five walks against the Panthers including a pair of bases-loaded walks. The pitching duo of Jordyn Ages and Reagan Hall limited the Panthers offense to just five hits and two runs while combining for four strikeouts in the circle for the 'Jacks. The Lumberjack offense will now look to replicate the results from their home opener last weekend against the Nicholls State Colonels that saw the SFA offense explode for eight runs in an 8-0 run-rule win over the Colonels to record their first home and conference win of the year.
Cardinals at a Glance:
The Lamar University Cardinals wrapped up a five-game homestand on Wednesday evening in Beaumont with an impressive 8-6 win over the Baylor Bears to tally their third straight win and grant the Cardinals their 10th home win of the year. Over the five-game homestand the Cardinals posted a 4-1 record, their only loss being a 5-4 loss to the McNeese State Cowgirls, while posting an 11-0 win over Texas Southern, and a pair of wins over the Cowgirls before defeating the Bears on Wednesday. The Cardinals have only played three road contests this year, posting a 1-2 road record, as they travel to square off with Houston following their series against the 'Jacks.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Adelyn Becerra and Ella Hill flexed their power on Tuesday afternoon in Prairie View as they both left the yard for the second time this season to help power the SFA offense. Mikaelah Burkland recorded her second consecutive multi-hit game against the Panthers, including smacking her fourth double of the season, while Lilly Bean drew a pair of walks against the Panthers including one of the two SFA bases-loaded walks. Reagan Hall stymied the Panthers bats on Tuesday as she tossed 5.0 innings of one-run ball, recording three punchouts in the process while Jordyn Ages opened the game in the circle for SFA and held Prairie View to no hits and a single run over the first two innings.
Scouting Report-Cardinals:
Veronica Harrison has been a power threat at the dish for the Cardinals all season as she leads the team in a trio of categories that includes doubles (six), home runs (three), and RBIs (19). Cala Wilson has been a tough out as she leads the team in batting average with a .382 mark, while Jayne Sepulveda is hitting .359 for the Cardinals and is a perfect 6-6 on stolen bases this year. Madison Guidry leads the Lamar pitching rotation with her 3.89 era, while Reagan Smith has struck out 24 batters this year.
Series:
Friday evening's homestand opener will mark the 46th all-time meeting in this historic Southland rivalry, with the Lumberjacks holding a 30-15 all-time record against Lamar. The Cardinals won the most recent meeting last season when they held on for a 4-3 home win over SFA, the Lumberjacks hold a 13-7 home record all-time against the Cardinals.
