NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Baseball Team (7-9, 2-4 SLC) opens up a four-game homestand on Wednesday evening against former WAC foe Abilene Christian University (11-5, 0-0 WAC) in a game that has a new start time of 5:00 p.m. CST due to forecasted rain.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday evening to open their four-game homestand as they dropped two of three to the Lamar University Cardinals last weekend in Beaumont. The Lumberjacks opened the series with a 2-0 victory behind a dominating pitching performance from Cody Templeton but were unable to tally a win over the final two games of the series, losing a 3-2 nailbiter in the rubber match of the series. The SFA offense drew six walks in the series finale and recorded six or more hits in two of the three games and now return home to the friendly confines of Pilgrim's Park where they have scored 67 runs over eight home games and hold a 6-2 home record this year.
Wildcats at a Glance:
The Abilene Christian Wildcats open up a four-game road trip on Wednesday in the Piney Woods and will look to continue their dominating stretch of play as the Wildcats carry a nine-game win streak into Wednesday evening. The Wildcat offense has run wild over the last nine games as they have scored double-digit runs in five of the nine wins and are coming off a three-game home series against Prairie View A&M that saw the Wildcats plate 45 runs over the three games, including two games where they scored over 18 runs. The Wildcats now take aim at claiming their first road win of the season on Wednesday in Nacogdoches.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Josh Ibe continues to torment opposing pitchers as he is slashing .366/1.241/.732 so far in 2025, adding on four doubles, a triple, and leads the team in both home runs (three) and RBIs (17), and has recorded a hit in six of his last seven contests. Ben Hoshizaki has found his groove at the plate recently for the Lumberjacks as he will carry a four-game hitting streak into Wednesday night against the Wildcats and tallied a three-hit night against Lamar in the second game of the series.
Cody Templeton continues to give opposing hitters fits as he pitched a complete-game gem against the Cardinals to open the weekend series against Lamar, striking out seven batters and only allowing five hits scattered over the full nine innings while not walking a single batter. In the process, Templeton lowered his era to a dazzling 1.53 on the year, and received his dues for his dominating stretch on the mound for SFA as he was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.
Scouting Report-Wildcats:
Nick Arias has been a kickstarter for the ACU offense as his .365 batting average leads the team while he has added on five doubles, a pair of home runs, and 16 RBIs so far in 2025. Zandt Payne has come through in the clutch for the Wildcats as he leads the team with 20 RBIs, while Grant Watkins has hit a team-leading four home runs this year. Brett Lanman and Dominick Reid have formed a solid 1-2 punch on the bump for ACU as they have combined to allow just 12 earned runs over 42.2 innings pitched for the 'Cats.
Series:
Wednesday evening's midweek will see these two former WAC rivals square off for the 32nd all-time meeting, with the Wildcats leading the all-time series 17-14 to the present day. The Wildcats won the most recent meeting last season as they took home an 11-3 road win over SFA. The Lumberjacks hold a 6-6 home record all-time against ACU.
